Anxiety and Depression


It used to be that the most common difficulty showing up in a psychologist's office was a person dealing with depression.  Now it has become anxiety... People are anxious about many areas of their lives today and seem to worry more than ever.  Of course, if you are anxious long enough you are likely to become depressed as well.  Psychiatrists and and other physicians tend to view anxiety and depression as something that happens to you, as illnesses in need of drug treatments... This does not have to be true for you!

I am a Psychologist and I prefer to think of becoming anxious, depressed or happy as something we do!  You can, if you choose, learn to change what you do and how you think to become happier and live a more satisfying and productive life... I would suggest that you start with the ideas on my Stress Management web page.  Medication may help in some circumstances, but the vast majority of the people I see are not taking any medication for the areas we are working on.  If you already have been prescribed medication, you also should be talking to a psychologist... medication is not a complete solution. 

Worry is probably the most common cause of suffering that I see in my office.  It is the thing that robs us of pleasure daily.  For many people, learning to interrupt worry is a straightforward task that can be learned in a few sessions with great relief of distress.  Similarly, "panic attacks"  and other problems with becoming overly anxious can often be managed within a few sessions.  For others, particularly those struggling with OCD and related obsessive thinking, it can take longer to find the strategies that work.  We now have lots and lots of strategies to help you... I often find that the biggest factor contributing to success is your motivation and commitment.  If we choose to work together and you commit to trying the many strategies that can help you, the odds in favor of your success are great !
